A high-speed chase that began in Louisville's Portland neighborhood yesterday ended when police officers shot the suspect near Corydon, Ind.

The suspect, whom police did not identify, was taken to University Hospital.

The incident began when an off-duty officer working security at the new Kroger at 620 N. 35th St. spotted a man stealing meat about 3:45 p.m., said Officer Dwight Mitchell, a spokesman for Louisville Metro Police.

Two officers confronted him in the store, and a scuffle ensued, Mitchell said.

The man escaped and drove off in a Ford Explorer, Mitchell said. Police pursued the SUV onto Interstate 264 and across the Sherman Minton Bridge.

New Albany police then took over the chase and were later joined by Harrison County officers who put out Stop Sticks that punctured three of the suspect's tires at the 113-mile marker, Indiana State Police Cpl. Stephen Didat said.

State troopers joined the chase at Corydon before the Explorer ran into the median at mile marker 103.

That's when officers fired, Didat said. Details about what prompted the shooting were not immediately available.
