LMPD shoots robbery suspect in the Portland neighborhood

A robbery suspect shot by a Louisville Metro Police officer in the Portland neighborhood has died.

LMPD Chief Steve Conrad says officers responded to reports of a robbery at a Metro PCS store at 26th and Market Streets just after noon on Tuesday. The suspect left on foot.

He says officers from the First Division spotted a man matching the description near 28th and Saint Xavier Streets a short time later. The officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire. The suspect was hit. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he died. No officers were injured.

Chief Conrad says the Public Integrity Unit will take over the investigation, as the officers are put on administrative reassignment. He says body cam footage and information about the officers involved will be released at a planned news conference on Wednesday.

A neighbor told WDRB she heard 6-12 gunshots, which she said is not unusual.

The neighbor who spoke with us didn't want to be on camera because of the "snitch" mentality in the neighborhood.

James Clarkson, owner of an apartment building, says his building was shot up during the exchange of gunfire, but none of the tenants inside were hurt."Basically, he shot at them first, made the first shot and they retaliated against him. They did what they had to do, I bet you," he said.

Neighbor Victoria Logsdon says she saw the damage. "It's 4 units, the one that's next store to us, their front door has shattered. The one up front- his front door shattered. He's not home. And the guy, the woman that lives next door to him, her windows broke, and it went straight through her house"
