A police officer shot a suspect who allegedly shot another person in an altercation near West Buechel on Sunday.

Both people were taken to University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition, said Maj. Frank Hardison, commander of the Louisville Metro Police public integrity unit.

Hardison said witnesses notified a West Buechel officer about the altercation in the 3400 block of Bardstown Road around 4 p.m., and the officer and an off-duty Hurstbourne Acres officer responded.

The suspect was shot by an officer, and both the suspect and the person shot by the suspect are in critical condition, he said.

Police declined to answer any further questions after giving the brief statement. A news conference will be held on Monday, but the time hadn't been determined as of Sunday evening.

The incident shut down several blocks for several hours. The investigation appeared to be focused on the parking lot of a Cuban restaurant.
