Louisville Metro Police shot and killed a man after a traffic stop in the Valley Station area Tuesday night.

It happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday on Grafton Hall Road, just north of the Gene Snyder.

LMPD Chief Steve Conrad spoke at the scene about what led up to the shooting. Conrad says officers stopped a car, but the car took off as officers approached it.

"As the officers got out of their car, the car they had stopped took off, and went about a half of a block and turned on to Grafton Hall (Road)," Conrad said. "They went up about five or six driveways and turned into the driveway."

That's when Conrad says one of the men got out of the car and started running toward the house, then shot at police. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect.

The suspect died at the scene.

The other four people who were in the car were being questioned, but have not been placed under arrest.

Police do not believe the men lived in the area, and it's unclear what prompted the initial traffic stop.

Both officers are now on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation, which is standard procedure anytime an officer is involved in a shooting.
