The Louisville Metro Police SWAT team was called in Wednesday after a man fired shots at officers who were attempting to serve multiple warrants on him, a spokesman said.

At about noon, officers from the VIPER squad were serving the warrants on the man at an apartment building in the 400 block of South Campbell Street, said Dwight Mitchell, a police spokesman.

The officers had consent to do a search, but as they were approaching the man opened fire on them, Mitchell said.

No one was hit, and the officers pulled out and set up a perimeter around the building and the SWAT team was deployed, he said.

Mitchell said at least some of the warrants were for violent crimes, including previous shootings.

The man's name was not released.

The bomb squad is also at the scene.

As the SWAT standoff continued past 1 p.m., police sent a message via pager that said, "MEDIA...PLEASE DO NOT HAVE YOUR HELICOPTER OVER THE SWAT AREA."

Tim Webb, owner of Webb's Market at the corner of Muhammad Ali and Wenzel Street, said the neighborhood doesn't normally see many disturbanaces.

"Nothing like this," he said.
