The logic is that we as police officers are trained from the start that there are people in the world that want to kill you because you wear a badge. Sounds crazy, but it is true. During my career I have encountered people that harbored those feelings. We may act paranoid because we are to some extent. We are square by a lot of people's standard, but we have to be to keep our jobs. We appear judgmental because we get to see the evil that people do to each other. So judge us if you wish, we are use to it.

When you get a chance, take a look at the Officer Down Memorial Page at www.odmp.org. Start reading back through the stories of the circumstances of some of the officers' deaths. While it isn't an everyday occurrance (thank God), there have been many officers who have been ambushed or hunted. Off the top of my head there was the Lexington officer a few years ago, the officers in the Seattle coffee shop, and a Puerto Rican officer a few weeks ago.

Here is an article from USA TODAY from last year

19 of 50 slain police killed in ambushes.

For that matter, just google "police officer ambush". It happens even more than I thought.

While the "general public" may not want to shoot us, all it takes is one malicious bullet to potentially kill me so my head is always on a swivel...

Do you want to be a police officer?

Well, sorry if I hurt your little feelings by being so paranoid as you put it, but I'm very fond of going home at the end of my shift to my family. If that means keeping my guard up against the majority of people who aren't a threat to me, as opposed to letting it down for a second against the one who is a threat, then that's what I'll do. I've been in enough fights to know that a split second lapse in judgment can cost you dearly. Apparently you haven't... I wish I still had your innocent view of the world... It must be nice to think like that.

The only part of your comment I agree with is that the public at large doesn't want to shoot you. 1000s of cops throughout this country have fallen asleep in their patrol cars and I can't think of one incident in which the cop was assassinated. Other than that, you're an arrogant *****.
