Come on, I am not the original poster but I detect a little anger in your tone. So he does not have a family...does that mean he cannot hope to make more than his base pay if he is willing to work for it? You are mixing two different issues. If he is single and wants to make an extra $20,000 to go paragliding, that is none of your concern. At least he aint getting garnished for child support.
