Relax Tom. Obviously people come to this site to see what others are thinking and saying. You are one of them. Some feel that you mentioned one of the biggest issues with promotion in your post - she "studied hard and got herself promoted". We don't want people in leadership positions (this is not exclusive to Shara) because they studied hard. We want leaders that have been through the "blood and guts" of this job and don't/won't ask officers to do things they haven't done themselves. We want leaders that inspire confidence, courage, and morale. Leaders that we trust to do the right thing, by us and the public. Leaders that we would follow into battle. When one becomes a Sgt. he or she is making a sacrifice (in theory). If it's about the power and the pay raise then we don't need you. Once promoted, a Sgt takes on an entire platoon as his or hers. The Sgt. must own the platoon. The Sgt. must be responsible and shoulder the blame when things don't work out or go wrong - then correct the troops so it doesn't happen again. The Sgt. must give all the credit to the troops for a job well done. If the Sgt played a part in the success, he/she must downplay their role and recognize the troops. A Sgt. must treat the platoon as if they were his/her family. The Sgt. must take charge, bleed with, and punish the troops as if they were his/her children. This will earn the respect of the troops and that's all a Sgt. should need or want - the respect of the troops.

Find me some of these Sgt's to promote to Lt and above. It's not happening and only getting worse. You will continue to hear and read about the displeasure of the troops until this department provides them with the leadership they deserve.
