Um, you really shouldn't use the term "common sense" until you know how to spell it. Just sayin'.

The police have not done "stupid things". Individuals have done stupid things. Every profession has its good and bad, from the priesthood to plumbers and everything in between.

A. If I had a nickel for every driver with common sense that doesn't speed, I wouldn't have a single nickel. Face it, everyone drives over the speed limit at one point or another, even without realizing it. Not everyone drives drunk. Weighing one against the other, driving drunk is far more deadly than speeding. Not every single time, in every single instance... but in this case, yes, driving drunk proved to be very, very deadly.

B. The officer involved in this particular accident made a bad decision but it doesn't make him a bad cop. Today I had questionable Thai food for lunch and that was probably a bad decision, but I'm not a bad person.

If people cannot separate an individual from an entire entity, i.e., one cop from the entire department, then those particular people are the ones whose common sense needs to be questioned.

By the way, proofreading is your friend*.
