Well "civilian police worker" WE ARE ALLOWED TO DRIVE THEM ANYWHERE 24/7 WHILE IN JEFFERSON COUNTY. I can drive to the store, mall, dinner, and to watch the man jump over the moon. While off duty there are NO RESTRICITONS, except for alcohol and bars. THe city wants us to drive them because when you see that the 200-300 plus cars that are driving around at any given time, most people think the police are everywhere when in fact there are only about 70-80 in all of Jefferson County on duty at any given time.

I appreciate your concerns, however there are things you might not have considered:

That officer also must have his radio on and respond to the accident that just occured right in front of the Hobby Lobby. He must also respond to request for help from the citizens while in that car. Then there's that stranded motorist along the way. That officer, I would be willing to wager, has given substantial amounts of his personal time to assist citizens of Louisville while driving that police car. His overtime rate is somewhere between $30-40 an hour. Who do you really think is getting the better deal here?

He is right on. The perception by the general public is officers get a free ride and thats not fair in their minds.

I've had to explain to many citizens why us using vehicles off duty is a benefit to them and the community. It takes a lot of explaining but once informed most usually agree its a great program.

Some of you just missed the point of the comment that was left. Everyone is so testy right now and rightfully so, but the person who posted was saying that we need to have a little situational awareness about us. Don't blow past a bunch of cars at a high rate of speed only to be seen walking out of Victoria's Secret. Don't ignore the stranded motorist, but make sure you are visible and make sure you tell them that you are off and on your own time. Tell them to call the mayor metro council. Exlain to them that this service is about to come to a screaching halt.

I'm sorry you feel the way you do, but it is SOP right now that an officer is and can use the assigned police car as a persoanl vehicle on and off-duty. An officer can go about his daily business as if the car was theirs, that is why most officers have secondary insurance on the vehicle. The public gets ill advice and propaganda from the media which gives everyone false information on whats really going on.

If you really work for a police agency and have family in metro government then you would already know that we are currently allowed to drive them off duty anywhere in the county to do whatever we want save for a few restrictions. That is the reason for the officer using his car for personal use, not some sinister plan to screw the mayor. Again, you would know that if you in fact work for a police agency.
