December 10th, 2008 @ 12:05PM (15 years ago)

I know you could only give a few examples, but I am sure people will post more here. It seems that Abramson has cut the wrists of Metro Louisville and with each shady deal and give-a-way that he does without anyone's consent we are slowly bleeding to death.

I cannot agree more. Years of corruption and malfesceance have brought our community to the brink of disaster. I beleive the unions and metro council should have the books thouroughly examined and if and when they find that he has been lying they should begin impeachment proceedings.

December 10th, 2008 @ 12:10PM (15 years ago)

I thought the unions were all sticking together on this? Why is that idiot Denny Norris in the paper today saying he has worked out a deal with Abramson to furlough people but not give back the raises. Didn't the teamsters just vote against this??? They need to get rid of that moron.

Here is another thought that I haven;t seen either. Abramson wants to furlough people days at a time. How about instead of taking 16 hours away from the single mom this Chistmas you take an hour each pay period? Sure it will take longer but you will eventually collect the same amount of money or is there some big ticket item you want to buy real soon?

I was looking at all the fat salaries in the mayor's iffice and thought that there would be a good place to make some cuts. All of s sudden I realized that I cannot once remember seeing Depputy Mayor Richard Neil Johnstone EVER. What does he do? Is he real or a phantom? He never gives speached and is never on the news or social functions. Is he a real person. I know and respect Bill Summers. Who is Johnstone? I see he makes $115,000.00 a year but there isn't even a picture of him anywhere.

Police will pay $100 for take home cars a month. $160 if you work off duty.

Take Home Cars

December 10th, 2008 @ 4:12PM (15 years ago)

This policeman will pay ZERO!!! Did he really think he was doing us a favor by cutting it $90?!?!?!? He has already said he looks for the budget to worsen after July so what do you think will happen to the price of take home cars then?? We have him in a corner right now by all being united and parking those cars....if we give in now to something that is just as outrageous as the initial offer we are only hurting ourselves and will worsen our situations as the months pass. Please dont get soft or begin thinking..."well maybe thats not soo bad"...IT IS!! I still dont believe there even is a 20 million defecit and he has yet to show us otherwise. Stay united in this....dont give in.

We need to park the cars and stand united. We need to file a lawsuit for all of the overtime we have accrued on off-duty policing all of these years since policy requires us to take action. No more free-time, baby.

We need to be paid for being on on-call status. We need to be paid for being required to be armed 24/7.

We need to hold his feet to the fire for every little single thing that has been going on.

I hope and pray that the Police Officers continue to stick together despite Jerry lowering the initial cost. This is only a smoke screen and a way for him to get his hands in your pockets as he did with the insurance. Some have already stated that $100 is not that bad which is the same thing that I heard when they started looking into the insurance deals and that has been increasing ever since we let him start charging us. We then said well $30 isn't that much to spend for gas since gas went up and now gas has gone down and he is raising the fee (because we opened the door and let him). If nothing else we should see a pattern here and put a end to it. I say we park these cars and make Jerry pay for his own mistakes some other way. I realize that the citizens are going to suffer a bit as we make runs while off duty and not charge the city but again it appears that they are not behind us on this deal. Please realize that $100 a month is your raise that you just fought so hard for and then some. If we are going to give our raises back then why do we fight for them to start with? Citizens of the community think that we should pay for the cars, thinking that we only drive them for our convenience and do not assist while off duty but there is some issues that for some reason don't seem to get brought up. The bank robber around Auburndale shopping center where he was fatally shot--atleast two officers off duty that I know of....The bank robber the other day that went down Breckenridge Ln.--Atleast one off duty officer...These are a few high priority crimes not to mention the little stranded motorist that we stop for each day....Please stick together and park the cars or next you will be buying a car on your own and putting lights in it to patrol in before it is over....It never ends...

December 10th, 2008 @ 6:56PM (15 years ago)

I have a question for the Chief. Due to the fact I have 4 kids and my wife can't work, I don't know if I will be able to afford $100 a month unless I pick up some off duty work, but then it will be $160 a month. My question is, since the US Supreme Court ruled against Toyota Motor Corporation and stated that you cannot force an empployee to come to work dressed in their uniform and safety equipment, who do I need to contact about getting a full size locker to store all my departmental equipment? I have Body armor, Riot Gear, batton, a shotgun, a CIT shotgun, a pepperball gun, MDT, various departmental forms, camera, tape recorder, tapes, flashlight etc... It is a good think I am no longer on the dive team!

Also what about the several weeks a month that I am on call? Do I get to take my car home those weeks or do i have to drive from one end of the county to the other, gear up, pick up my car and then drive to the hostage incident???

Ok....So when exactly will these fees take effect? I have to make sure I turn the car in before that...Of course, we could all go ahead and turn them in anyway...BTW, I'm researching OSHA regs as we speak.

I hope and pray that any member that accepts these conditions without a multi-year contract solidifying amounts,, such as these, would do so only out of the hardship caused for their children and or care for their loved ones. Any one who accepts these terms, as presented, because of concern, only over personal greed should be ashamed. Let's stand and make each other proud. We can accept terms regarding these vehicles. Terms which are solidified in writing and do not have the weight of "paper moons". Please consider alternatives which the Chief's or Mayor's office may offer, but not these, and no without a contractual agreement regarding terms and monies. Thanks for letting me rant.

Do you honestly think that it will end at $100/$160? It has only been a couple of months since $30/S60and the cost is going up already. In a couple of more months will we see another increase? Think long-term here folks.

Just buy a beater and own it. Don't let the take-home car own you.

Action

December 10th, 2008 @ 7:51PM (15 years ago)

Guys and Gals,

The time has come for us to start getting our message out to the public. This web site is a great forum but some folks will never see this and the others may not believe what we say. We need to hit the streets, the air waves, You Tube, or whatever we need to do to let the public know what is really going on. The next Mayors meeting needs to be attended by any and all Public Service Employees (Police, Fire, EMS, Corrections, and anyone else he is screwing) and we need everyone in attendance to know what is going on. He may be viewed as a daggone Hero again to the public because he "saved the city budget" and did not have to lay anyone off. We have to get ALL citizens to see what he is doing!

Several articles have been written here lately in the Communist Journal by prominent people in our community. I have not seen the one from today but I read the one from Sunday's Forum that was written by Mike DiGiuro. He has an interesting point of view and we could benefit by teaming up with him. If people will not listen to us maybe they would respect the words from a prominent Prospect business owner and a lawyer.

The time is now! Please...FOP lets organize something and start getting the real message out. If you all missed it the Mayor was on 84 whas this past sunday spilling out lie after lie. When he was confronted with any tough question he gave the caller the run around. He actually said on the air thay we sold a broken helicopter recently and when I called in and told him it was not broken he cut me off and said it was IN FACT broken.

We need to brain storm and write down every bad deal he has made that helped out a buddy of his and cost the city money. We need to then relay ALL that information to the public and let them re think their stance with him. Bottom line...lets do something and get this city to finally wake up and see who is robbing...I mean running this city.

By now I am sure that everyone has heard the Mayors decision on the cars. He made it very clear last week when he met with the FOP that it was not a negotiation and it was going to be his way or the highway. He also stated in that same meeting that he was not only planning on taking money from us now but he was also going to take our 2% raise for next year. DID EVERYONE KNOW THAT HE SAID THAT? Well he did!!

Everyone needs to remember that it wasn't so long ago he convinced us to pay $30 and $60 because gas was almost $4 a gallon. If we agree to this we will never get it back and we need to ask ourselves, what is next and when? We fight so hard at contract time to get the little we get and then he finds a way to take it right back from us. WE CAN NOT LET THIS CONTINUE!!

I find it very interesting that when the requests were made to see the Budget/Books we were told there was not enough time to get an independant audit done. He sure doesn't want to be transparent, does he? I say we should push forward, get the books (THEY ARE PUBLIC RECORDS AND HE CANNOT REFUSE) and just see for ourselves what the financial crises is or isn't. Are you with me on that?

The Mayor has never had so much opposition before and I personally think it had him rattled. That is why he now has presented a much different approach to the crisis. I am convinced that if we ALL(Police, Fire EMS) continue to stand united and fight for what is rightfully ours then we will prevail. To all of my fellow FOP members, please do not change your minds and agree to the $100 and $160 regardless of the hardship it may cause you. I personally will have to go and purchase a vehicle but I know in my heart that in the long run it will save all of us money and it will send a strong message to the ALMIGHTY MAYOR that we are not going to let him ever use the cars against us again.

So I ask again, ARE YOU WITH ME ON THIS? Be safe!

The ONLY reason he cut the charge of the cars to a lower amount is to split the Officers. I have heard some say that $100 is not so bad....well it will go UP again in the next few months. Don't let him trick you with this latest ploy. We must stand together and park the cars. Didn't we contribute the insurance from the helicopter that crashed and then the last helicopter that was sold (and in good condition). There ya go Jerry.........there is our contribution! He really HATES us doesn't he? I agree with another Post that said go 10 or 15 deep to buy a car and the deals they will give us will be great! I have been shopping for a car (I want a beater for work) and have found many good deals! PARK THE POLICE CARS!!!!!!!! When the streets are empty without police cars, he will be responsible for the crime rate going up!

FOLKS,

In a meeting attended by 700 officers a few weeks ago, this issue was decided. NO MORE MONEY. WTF are you waiting for. You simply call Personnel, tell them they are no longer authorized to deduct money from your check for fuel. Ask your supervisor for an OPT OUT form. Ask your Major where to park the car at the end of the shift. Get your personal car to your Division prior to signing, and poof.......NO MORE TAKE HOME FLEET. Why wait for the FOP to formulate another plan. The vote was made. The mayor was very specific. No more negotiation for the unions. This plan of action "Will be implemented Jan, 1st. I have nothing more to say.

FYI...It will be mine, all mine!!!

Louisville Police Officer's Credit Union is making Used Car Rates right now for 4.9% Thanks to them for doing what they can to help all of us do the right thing. Park them.

After they got that rate, and restructured some other credit debts for me, it works out that I pay nothing for my OWN car. (Insurance is included in that amount as well...It is a wash.) Check it out. You too may be able to get your own car without any financial burden. And that saves me from other off duty burdens as well...like wrecks, stranded motorists, and dumb questions...not to mention on duty burdens like arrests, tickets, or anything but responding to radio runs. Roberry season just around the corner...I'll hold down the Thornton's.

My car is now parked in the division. (As of 18:25 on 12/10/2008)

Does it make anyone nervous we are coming up with all these ideas and not the FOP? Their silence during this crises has been deafening. Police, the people they represent are hurting, struggling to make ends meet. As a struggling member of the FOP I write the following commentary, I think the FOP should raise our dues. I just think we are geting soooo much for the $56 a month we pay. I feel guilty.I feel like I am stealing a service Hey John! Wake up a minute, crawl out from under your rock and charge us more money. Its not like we have representation to do anything about it. John, are you taking a cut in your 1,200. a month salary? I guess it could be worse you could ask for a raise like your useless predecessor did. To everyone with a position in the FOP keep up the good work, oh and maybe you could sell our kids into slavery. You know free labor for the city. We all need to do our part. I bet after the way you handled this Jerry will never mess with us again. You boys are real Tigers. GROWL I mean MEOW. Actually you are brave. I bet your not afraid to show your faces in public after the way you mishandled this crises. See anyone else would have commited suicide. Think of how many more trips you all could take with the extra money. I will tell you I never felt so strong as when a buch of you go the Las Vegas, or D.C. to get drunk, I mean what would I do with the money anyway? Selfishly take my family on a trip.I feel like I can take on the world with you boys behind me. Come on world want to fight!. Now a comment to the members. Demand an expenditur sheet from the FOP. Look at the trips, who went, what was spent. Then quit. Call personel and ask them to stop taking your money out ASAP. I will quit this week. Thanks for fighting for me boys I couldnt have gotten a 0% raise, rising health insurance ( I now have no insurance), car fiasco..... After all the bill boards, interviews, organized marches, law suits, slow downs how does the mayor have the nerve to mess with us? I just dont get it. Good night everyone and may God give us the answers.

Make sure that Mr. Norris is extended every professional courtesy that he is DUE! Obviously, someone has some unknow motivation to stay in good graces with Jerry. Are you afraid of what will come out in the books Denny? The Teamsters in Louisville are a joke, hell, feel free to call the AFL CIO next time.

Taken from courier journal . com tonight:

Instead of $30 a month, those using the take-home-car program will now pay $100 a month. For officers who use their cars for off-duty employment, the monthly fee will rise from $60 to $160.

White said he believes many officers will accept, although not necessarily like, the move.

"No one wants less than what they've already had," White said. "But in the scheme of things, it is well worth it to keep these take-home cars."

Well, Chief, you're sadly mistaken. We will come together.

Can anyone get a good deal on yard signs that say, "Sorry neighbors, I can't afford my police car anymore."

How about the FOP purchase 1 for every officer that turns in his car. We could use the money we just allotted for commercials and newspaper ads. I bet we'd get more press for a longer time with yard signs.

The way I see it unless my math is really off, if he was successful in collecting the $100 and $160 from us for the next six months, Jan -June, that would be approximately $900,000.00 give or take. Now we all know he is sitting on approximately $100,000,000.00. So the way I see it is all we have to do is stay UNITED and NOT pay anything for the cars and I mean ANYTHING. I even think we should give him a dose of his own medicine and tell him that we are no longer going to pay the $30 and the $60.

Just ask yourself this. Is Jerry really going to have us park our cars over $900,000.00 when the public outcry will be so great and it will be, especially knowing that he is sitting on the $100 Million.

My fellow Officers, do we let the dirt bags and the thugs on the street push us around? NO WE DON'T! Are we going to still let the Mayor continue to push us around or are we going to finally have the guts to stand united against him? On the street we are always there for each other, sometimes we have to fight and as you all know we always WIN.

STAND UNITED + FIGHT = WIN!!!!

And to think they all thought your television skills were so poor. John you keep up the good work and before you know it the FOP with be gone and all the members will be non-sworn with no benifits.

Here is just an idea....maybe if there was some type of on-line poll showing the number of officers that wont be participating in the take home program and maybe if that was to be shown to the public at say a news event then the public might actually SEE how serious this is before we PARK em. WE all know they've got us for December thats why he waited till the 10th to do this, so 01-01-2009 let us unite and PARK em at the divisions. The Mayor is smart..he made us think we would have to pay the 150-210 for the cars that way when he lowered it to 100-160 it would divide us, surely some people are going to pay for their "marked target"...lets be realistic if we can get 50-70% to opt out of the take home program its a success...hopefully higher 85-90. WE all know the Upper command, majors, Lts, some sgts, training and "special" unit persons will pay not to mention those who have to have off duty because they've spent beyond their means, will pay....I hope and pray I am wrong...We need to stay strong, unite, fight this as one not as a few.

I like the idea of the signs for officers who give up their cars...it will send a strong message as to how many police cars were actually in the neighborhood and the citizens there didn't even know it.

Chief White is living in a bigger fantasy world then Jerry if he thinks public safety is not going to be affected when the majority of us refuse to pay that much for a take home car and the public rarely sees a police car on the street anymore.

December 10th, 2008 @ 11:25PM (15 years ago)

I am a LMPD Teamster and I will not vote for the 4 furlough days. Nothing is guaranteed. Why vote to give up paid days and still have the possibility of lay offs. Did Jerry ask to alter the contracts on the Arena or Cordish, I think not. So why should we alter our contract that Jerry agreed to less that 1 year ago.

Denny Norris and his bunch are worthless. Why is it I have to find out what my union has agreed to in the media? Should not the membership have been consulted first before Norris makes a deal with Jerry?

Come to 8th and Broadway tomorrow at the Teamster Union Hall. It is on the second floor in the brick building. It is a sight to see, straight out of the 1960's with smoke stained walls and pale yellow furniture.

This is in response to an earlier message I wanted to make sure that everyone read it.

Your message makes NO SENSE! You are the FOP. The leadership has come up with the same ideas you have. They presented the ideas to the chief and the Mayor. What makes you think that they would listen. All you have done is put a single voice out to the mayor that we are confused. The FOP leadership is and will continue to work for us.

The mayor told the city we were short 20 million dollars and the only way to solve it was 200 a month and a 2% pay cut. We the FOP told him to F*** O**! Then all of a sudden he was able to fix the problem with only 100 and no pay cut. Do you honstely think that this has solved the problem?

The mayor is looking for the FOP to split on this issue. I am not an ACTIVE member and I am sure some trips are taken. However I am willing to gamble that if we stay united ( as the firefighters did when they gave up 3100 a year) we can fight through this. If people continue to look at this like you with a personal agenda then the mayor wil take advantage of all FOP BROTHERS AND SISTERS and we will not win the war.

Do not downgarde your brothers who are also going to give up cars and or pay without being a positive influence in the brain storming session. The board is only 6 people that WE choose to be our voice.

Now let me go through you letter and speak on it, most of it I have covered but will bring it up again. You said we are coming up with ideas and not the fop, again we are the fop with ONE voice that the board is speaking. I do not understand your comment about 1200 a month salary for the president? Are we payin 1200 a month salary to the president? I thnk we are paying 1200 a year for someone to spend COUNTLESS hours trying to help us. Next to say that anyone is selling a kid into free labor is derogatory. The only person I see selling someone to free labor is the teamsters.

Next, how did the FOP MISHANDLE the crisis they called a meeting the day after the first annoucment and agreed to not accept the terms the mayor gave them. Then they had a member of the community step forwar and speak for. Next the political waiting game began. When the mayor came out and said 100 or 160 for the cars they began working on it.

Now I have been to DC and the FOP did help pay for it. However you talk about seeing the budget or the books. I have been to the lodge and that is posted in the meeting hall. If trips are being taken out of waste I would like to see them and I will agree with you. If you want to quit I will say this, do not act like the cowrads I deal with everyday and make IDLE threats, QUIT spare the working members of the FOP your senseless chatter and leave. We do not need cowards like you expressing a negative attiude onto us or the community. If you want to be a quiter then I am sure Jerry has a position open for you on his security detail, theyt are WAY over paid anyway.

I am confused. Can someone please clarify this for me? I may have misunderstood, but is every Metro Employee including all emergency services getting a 4 day furlough?

If that is the case then that should be ALL anyone should have to take. I don't think he can do it, because it would violate our contracts. If that is the case we are getting hosed.

Otherwise you will end up paying $1,200 for take home priveleges or $1,920 for Off Duty Take home plus 32 X your hourly rate???????????????????

We would still be paying much more than a regular metro employee.

I am all in favor of parking the cars, but I understand that because of the crappy raises abramson has always given us that some guys gals need the off duty work just to pay the bills.

Just like the Library Tax, he is counting this in his his budget before it passes. I say park every car and then watch him look like the fool both he and White are. Kelly Downard said it best when he said the layoff threat was just for Jerry to get his way and force us to fold to him. There is a reason he does'nt want those books opened and I say let's remain as one and hold his feet to the fire on this and PARK those cars!!!!!!

I will be sacrificing and cutting back, yet I am a police officer in a brother/sister hood, not the C.O. I get paid to be. A true leader will turn in their car, stand with their people and not back down . This administration will come and go, but I will always remember who stood up for what they believe and more importantly for what is best for the TEAM !!!!!!!! I will make it to the absolute top, be a silent threat while getting there - to accomplish what needs to be done, and without drinking the kool-aid required. I will always remember those that were not sell-outs and selfish. How will you be remembered? This is the time to make your choice, because I, along with everyone else, will ALWAYS remember !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does the director of the zoo, who stated it is "imperitive" that he have a take-home vehicle, now get his monthly cost for that raised like the police do? I really want to know, because this is ridiculous. I mean, it's ridiculous for him to have the car to begin with, but to know he could still be paying 30 bucks drives me nuts.

December 11th, 2008 @ 7:06AM (15 years ago)

All the public safety unions need to stand strong together and speak NO to Jerry with one voice! There was an article in the metro section of the paper yesterday, stating that Denny Norris of the Teamsters union had reached a tentative agreement of 4 furlough days with the mayor. THIS IS NOT TRUE! Teamster's membership voted down the first proposal on Monday afternoon (2% reduction and 3 days). This new proposal will also be voted down. Some are acting in fear because the teamsters union was the only one dumb enough to give up its layoff protection for public safety (Metrosafe, EMS, LMPD civilian staff) in the last contract negotiations. How I was raised, when you are backed into a corner you stand up and fight! (not bend over for Jerry) I know the possibility of layoffs are scary, but we all need to stand up together and fight as a team with our Brothers and Sisters in Police, Fire, EMS, and Corrections! It's the right thing to do!

Sermon Ended.

Cost discrepency

December 11th, 2008 @ 7:10AM (15 years ago)

Why is it that one fee (for those who don't use it off duty) is going from 30 to 100, which is a 70 dollar increase

But for those who DO use it "off-duty", it is going from 60 to 160, which is a 100 dollar increase

I know I'm stating the obvious here, but even when he tries to screw people, it is nonsensical. I agree with parking them, but if he is going to even attempt to raise the take-home car rate, it should be a consistent increase across the board. Is there any logic to why the take home car is only 70 dollars more valuable to one group but 100 dollars more valuable to another? Ignorance is not bliss.

I would like to know how much money this clown has made off of this city. With all of the kickbacks we all know he's getting, and the ones we don't. All of the shady deals he has made. I wish someone would look at that. It's funny because I have personally talked to people that know him really well and know first hand, some of the things he's been up to. But they are so scared to come out and say something because of the connections he supposedly has. That and no one on the media has enough balls to investigate him.

No matter what happens to the take home car plan we should continue to ask to see the information containing the budget shortage. I think the mayor is hoping all this will go away. He started all this by continually trying to screw over LMPD, LF R and EMS. Keep the pressure up no matter what happens and make him regret the day he said 20 million dollar budget shortfall.

Most of you say "AHHH The Police get cars and We don't, so take theirs away, nah nah nah nah boo boo". The city didn't decide in the 70's and early 80's to be nice and do something nice for the police. They did it for the illusion of more police and the ability to get FREE Police work in exchahge for the cars. Citizens will be losing thousands of hours of FREE police work that the Police give each year while OFF DUTY. Since the inceptions of the take home cars the citizens have received millions and millions of FREE help and now its all being pizzed away by Mayor Jerry. Just as an EXAMPLE if the police have given 1 million hours of FREE time to the citzens since the take home program began. The city saved approx 35 million in Overtime, but its probably 10 times that.

King Jerry : "How much more do you think the peasants will pay for the cars."

Kernel White: "Let's just throw our line out and see how much they'll pay."

To the guys and girls that think 100 Dollars is the end of this and are trying to justify they need that car. Think again the mayor has already stated that he expects the shortfall to continue for 18 months. Don't be surprised when it goes back to the original 210 and 160 on July 1. This will never go away as long as he is in office. Lest we forget how our insurance was free and it has continuously went up. Everytime we get a raise it will be eaten up by insurance and fuel reimbursement.

Here's how I think cars should be done: 1. A poll should be given to EVERY officer and have them state if he/she are going to continue in the take home program. 2. The poll should be made public. 3. A aggressive PR campaign showing the benefits of the take home program, moral of the department, what has happened to our contract the last couple of years, cost of living vs % raises, salary comparison to departments our size, run ratio to officer ratio, CAD showing how many off-duty officers are on the air during a 24hr period, price comparisons between take home cars and pool cars, staffing levels for every division on every shift. 4. Decide on a actual date to rescind the payment of the take home cars and park them at the districts. 5. Start using departmental time to get into uniform and out. 6. Stop using PERSONAL cellphones for business duties ( ex. "do you have a # for homicide to call you at?'' NO go to channel six) 7. Stop making two person runs with one car ( violating policy). 8. Stop cancelling other cars on thier own beat, because your "closer".9. Stop cancelling EMS/Fire, make the "victims" refuse treatment at the scene ( takes the liability off you anyways). 10. Stop working off duty at establishments that the Mayor has endorsed.

11. Come together and fight...with or without the FOP....

Heres an idea for those who dont have a second car...get every officer together who doesnt have another car and find a dealership that supports police, fire, ems and go to them...surely if as little as 100 people go to the dealership at the same time they would offer some type of discount not to mention maybe an additional discount for professional courtesy..............Anyone know of any favorable dealerships or thier GM's .

This is something we ALL must fight for....but lets do it professionally and like adults, let the Mayor act like the child.

December 11th, 2008 @ 11:28AM (15 years ago)

I have been without a car now for eight days....not by choice,my car was redlined. I was told I could not have a car to take home because there was not enough pool cars. Here is the problem i have with that. I AM PAYING $30 for something i am told i can not use. I have no problem driving my POV to work...but dont charge me for YOUR CAR. Why should i have to pay the full $30??? RIGHT? So i went to HR to see if i could have it prorated or something, they said NO. Per HR even if you use the car one day in a month i must still pay the full $30. My ? to those who want to pay the 100 or 160...what happens when your car breaks down and you cant get a car and you that are paying all this money???

The more time Jerry and the spindoctors have to fudge/forge the books, the harder it will be to hold him accountable and indicte him and his cronies. 3. Federal interest in the finances of Louisville should be occuring - did taxes go down for everyone but me the last few years? Jerry's tax-based income continues to increase every year, so why is the city in money troubles overnight?

Can we get some answers?

December 11th, 2008 @ 1:48PM (15 years ago)

Ladies Gentlemen

I am going to park my car, because it is ludicrous for me to pay $100 a month. or $160 a month to work off duty. Every other metro employee will be helping witht he bail out for less than $700 a year. I am being unfairly penalized because abramson hates the police.

Having said that here is my plan. On the first day we do not have a car I will turn all of my gear into my Major for safe keeping every day until I get a locker that I can store it in. The United States Supreme Court has already ruled on this issue. I do not have to take equipment belonging to the department home with me. I do not have to dress in my equipment before I start work. I will change at the station. I will check out a car, perform the routine maintenance and load all my gear up. This should only take about 45 minutes that I could have been on the street making runs. It will also take approximately the same amount of time at the end of the shift to turn everything back in. So your decision Mr. Mayor had just cost the citizens of our community. It guarantees less police coverage and lowered response time. There is no overlap time between latewatch and daywork so you can clearly see that between 0715 and 0845 every morning there will be no police officers available to make runs. You can do the math for the begining and end of each shift. If I were a crook I would be anxiously awaiting the times when I could rob and steal with impunity. There will be no police on the streets for up to 3-4 hours out of every day.

Good choice Jerry! I am glad to see you did your homework again. If you don't believe me Chief, check with Dennis Simms about the USSC vs. Toyota case. also be prepaired to have to expand the locker rooms at each division. I wonder how much all that will cost?

You say the Police won't negotiate? That is a lie. We offered many solutions and you chose this. I tell you what . Since everyone else is taking 4 furlough days, I will offer this compromise. I will pay $60 a month but I will be able to use my car on or off duty for that price. ~OR~ I will take 32 furlough hours, 1 every pay period for 20 pay periods and 2 hours per pay period for 6 pay periods and keep my car at no charge. That way I can still afford to pay my bills, unlike the plan you came up with for all the other metro employees.

YOU must signe and additional contract Mr. Mayor that theese fees will not be raised during the term of our agreement. You must also sign an agreement that if the economy improves you will forgoe taking money or furloughing further hours.

Before I do any of this you have to show the public the copmplete records, not just your stupis little summary pages you currently have on the website. I have a Bachelors in Buisness Administration and I am still in the long haul of going to night school and working on my masters. Those summary sheets and graphs are the most pitiful excuse for your "books" that I have ever seen.

Stop and think

December 11th, 2008 @ 2:15PM (15 years ago)

The department is already preparing for the mass turn in of cars. This means King Jerry wins. We need to ******** it up and continue with the unfair labor lawsuit. This sucks but if we turn in the cars and he surpluses them (like Air 10), we will never again have a takehome car program.

I am 100% behind the FOP and the majority if we decide to turn it those cars but we need to think this thru and not jump to an quick decision. We can always opt out next month but they have made the threat that opting out now will offer no opportunity to get back it. Think about it. We have lost this battle but we cant give in on the takehome car program and allow King Jerry to get his way.

Disagree but for the community we can pay this while we are uncovering the budget cover ups. Are public sympathy is none in these poor fanatical times. Look at the big picture. Just a thought.

December 11th, 2008 @ 3:09PM (15 years ago)

I have read every post on here. I find it somewhat baffling that everyone is not getting the big picture. Jerry is a liar. It's part of being a politician. He can not help himself at this point. Here is what I firmly believe. This is not the end of the charging as it relates to our cars. This was a quick fix for the deceptive spending we all know occurs in Metro Government. He does not want to announce the end of the take home fleet as it would be political suicide. He is forcing us to end it. I simply will not pay 100.00 for the next six months only to see it jump an additional 100.00 in June after he announced he has already projected a 13.5 million shortfall for the next fiscal year. It is time to cut our losses and keep some money in our pockets. We will not be getting a raise any time in the near future. So be it. I have become accustomed to the money I bring home to feed my family and refuse to work off duty. I have not worked additional hours for 5 years. The time at home has tremendously strengthened my family. It is time to end the take home fleet while we have no further "Skin in the game". Is it not enough that you put your skin in the game every night and day for this community? We will survive this as we do all things. It is called Professionalism. I hope each member of this department stays strong and stops this madness. I also am awaiting the findings of the FOP meeting held this morning. Why not put the info out to those of us that are not leaving the union. We need to formulate a plan of action prior to the meeting tomorrow. I have read many great potential actions on here. I would sure like some of them to go public.

For those crying about where the FOP is do you really think they're going to broadcast their plan on this site? It doesn't do much good to have a strategy that the Mayor's office can see. If you have questions about what's going on send John or Larry an email. Or here's a wild concept come to the FOP meeting next tuesday and ask them in person. We're merely playing a reactive game here...we've let the Mayor make the first move and then countered it. Your FOP President has been in the media more the past 3 weeks than any other FOP President since merger. The corrupt dealings of Jerry Abramson is finally hitting the public. Stand unified, park your car if you can, don't hold ill will towards those who can't afford too, and we'll get through this.

A man with some authenic worries

And many vain and silly ones,

I am well-schooled in sleeplessness;

I know it from the inside out.

I breathe, and I know what's at stake.

But still sometimes I'm sane and sound,

However heart or head may ache;

I go to sleep when I lie down.

With no determined care to breathe.

I breathe and live and sleep and take

A sabbath from my weariness.

I rest in an unasking trust

Like clouds and ponds and stones and trees.

The long-arising Day will break

If I should die before I wake.

HOPEFULLY WHEN THE FOP DECIDES TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE CARS TO THE PUBLIC THE "MEMO" THE CHIEF SENT WILL PLAY A PART...JUST TO SHOW HOW VINDICTIVE THESE PEOPLE ARE. THE PUBLIC IS GOING TO BE VERY UPSET IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS WHEN WE PARK OUR CARS THE IDEA IS TO HAVE THEM P***ED AT THE MAYOR AND CHIEF AND NOT US.

Who cares if we cant get the cars back, this is not some ploy to get to keep our cars. It is a unified message to ol' JerryGrinchmas that WE will no longer let him dangle these cars in front of us. Unfortunately the city will fall to higher crime but hey its not on us itll be on King Jerry and Chief because we gave them PLENTY of other options to cut the budget..they knew we could only take so much...THIS IS IT....park the cars and do what policy and the contract says to do while working on duty..off duty is yours and your families time now. My friend who works downtown said to me tonight, "why does he hate you guys so much? What if he or his family needs your help one day?" I told her KARMA has a way of dealing with bad people, he'll NEED US for something sooner or later, same goes for RW and I dont dare think how well respond.

THAT POLICE CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN THEIRS SO LET THEM HAVE IT, IT'S JUST A CAR A TOOL TO BE USED AT WORK. PARK,PARK,PARK,PARK,PARK THEM AND DONT LET ANYONE TRY AND SCARE YOU INTO KEEPING IT. ITS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE, IT WILL NEVER BE AS IT WAS.

There have been alot of people on here talking about parking the cars but i guarantee you that there wont be 50% of the officers who will actually park them. There will be some excuse to why they have to have their cars. Especially the new officers coming in or the ones who have only been on a few years. It seems that they just want to look cool in the cars and have one sitting in their driveway rather then standing up for what is right. Back when he first emplimented the charge for taking home the cars i knew it was just a set up for disaster. Sure 30 dollars isnt alot but that is only a start. Now look at it and he isnt done. It will only get higher and higher. I was reading the budget that he sent throughout metro email and he stated that he is cancelling all projects that werent already obligated to contract. I was kind of disturbed because he doesnt want to violate any project contracts but he has no problem trying to violate ours.

Brothers and sisters. I have a huge problem. I am committed to the FOP and solidarity but I and my family have to eat too. I dont live beyond my means. I simply am just average and I NEED off-duty to survive. I want to stand united but...... If it causes me to lose a takehome car for ever, I dont know what to do. FOP leadership, the cars are important to me and most. What guarentees do we have that we can win these cars back?

Again, I am not swaying from the FOP solidarity but. what will I gain by throwing in my keys?? I need something, as most, to keep me in the fight. Many will not stay on course without some hope that this will help get us ahead in the end. Not having a takehome car will cause me more finatual hardship than $100 or $160. Tell me it will be worth it.

So we are all in agreement NOT to give up our 2% raise, right?! Do you realize that $160 bucks a month is closer to a 4% SALRY CUT??!!! Please do not let Jerry pull the wool over your eyes!! If you would not stand to loose 2%, why would you GIVE away 4% or more??!!! Park the stupid cars, let Jerry find another excuse!!

Park your car it is simply. And if your buddy don't park his like he said he was remind him of it. Then if you get scared and want your car back just ask for it and tell them do to your financial woes at x-mas time you could not afford the vehicle. First of all, do you think Metro gov is not going to take your money and second if they don't give it back then you file grievence for discrimination read your Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Park the cars guys! Let's hit him in the wallet. This article is the best crystalization of Jerry's history I've ever seen in print. I'm a firefighter and I'm here to tell you we're with you 100% of the way. He smacked us hard with the state incentive pay cut (8 - 9% annually for me) and now he's cutting our positions and closing a firehouse that's been open every single day for 137 years. Trust me. It will get worse for you if we don't give him a nice black eye now. Jer would like nothing more than to divide us. We need to back each other up now more than ever. Abramson is a gangster. The history of favors and cronyism is unbelieveable. This guy should get Blagojeviched.

New Take Home Car Fee Memorandum

December 12th, 2008 @ 1:40AM (15 years ago)

Fellow officers my newest concern now comes with the chief trying to BULLY officers on this department to keep their take home cars and pay the $100-160 fee. The General Memorandum basicallysays we well not be able to participate in the take home car program again if we opt out. All you need to read is the last two lines of the general order. It never was a problem before. Why is a problem now if you opted out and wanted back in at a later date? Sounds like SOMEONE is taking it a little personal that we don't BOW DOWN to him, his attempted intimidation and this wayward policy! We stood up the first time two weeks ago when we were told were going to pay $210 to keep them and we united and ultimately won. The chief never made a decision on the take home cars although he said he was going to if we didn't choose one of the 4 plans provided by the mayor/chief. He never made his decision. I wonder why? Guess we stood up for ONCE and won. We have to do it again and we will WIN again. They didn't expect a bunch of "dumb ol' cops" to stand up since we have bowed down everytime to the mayor. They expected everyone to pay since everything that has been placed before us has been passed. I have a concern that this new offer is going to divide all of us, which is what the mayor wants so we are not as strong. But caution to all of the people who are going to pay the new fee and say "it's not that bad." Shame and pity on you and soon you will see the light when your fees get raised again (at any point the city can raise them) since there will be no contract or end date. Hey it would be only $50 less that made you change your mind BUT, two weeks ago you wouldn't stand for the $210 fee but, now you would pay the $160? That really confuses me.... If you decide to pay the fee you will be ******** off and mad again when it's raised again, but hey the mayor already made over a HALF MILLION DOLLARS. Do the math! If 600 officers (roughly half of the department) pay $100 a month for 6 months= $360,000, if $160= $576,000. Double those figures for a one year total of $720,000 and $1,152,000. They will only make money off of you, not saving it for the budget. If you pay, again the mayor will have duped you and the mayor will be laughing all the way to the new arena YOU built with your ultimate stupidity! Smile and be proud because you helped build it with the money you were bullied out of. I know when I wake up January 10th I will be able to look myself in the mirror and be proud I stood up for what was RIGHT and not what was in my best financial interest. SHOW UP TO THE MEETING ON TUESDAY WHETHER YOU SUPPORT THE FEE OR NOT AND SHARE YOUR OPINIONS. Yours truly, an officer who WILL NOT BE BULLIED hopefully you won't be either. STAY STRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know if we park our cars do we get to keep our same car or do we go back to a pool car. I have been on 2 years and have a 2008 Crown Vic. I really hate to give it up but I am willing to do that as long as a majority of the department gives up theirs. It will cost me more money to drive my truck that gets 10 miles to the gallon 50 miles a day then it will to pay 160 a month, especially if gas goes back up. I can't afford to buy a third vehicle so that is out of the question. Just wondering if the majors get to decide if we keep our cars or if the chief will sell them off. I am sure there are a bunch of new guys that would love to have my car. I am afraid that many people are going to say they are going to park them and when it comes down to it are going to back out. I don't want to turn in my keys and then find out that a bunch of people chickened out and I am without my car. I am one of the guys who it is going to cost to park my car but I will gladly do it for the betterment of my fellow officers.

realistic answers to continuously asked questions

December 12th, 2008 @ 11:55AM (15 years ago)

Q - Will we be able to keep the same cars? A - NO! - if we are split in parking them, I guarantee your car will be pooled out. If the whole department sticks together and opt's out, we have a much better chance of keeping the same cars. STICK TOGETHER

Q - Will the cars still cost 100/160 bucks 6 months from now? A - Are you kidding? NO. If Jerry finds he can split us up and get even some to pay, he will raise it when he gets a chance to take more from you. He will keep going until he finds a limit that folks just cannot tolerate. STICK TOGETHER

Q - I will lose between 20-75 bucks a month by parking my car, why should I park it? A - ******** it up. This isn't just about MONEY. This is about principle as well. Do you think this money is going to help the city? or Jerry's slick inside deals? or maybe it's to replace money he squandered/stole and is trying to cover this up! This money is not going to help the taxpayers of Louisville for sure. STICK TOGETHER

Q - What will happen to special response units and reaction time if we don't take home our cars? A - Don't worry about it. Not your fault, not your job to figure it out. Though I am glad people care about this - it shows you care about the community. STICK TOGETHER

Q - Why should we keep being proactive and work hard when we are getting screwed again and again? A - Because the community needs us and pays our salary. Jerry may mismanage the taxpayer's (our) money, but we should not let the public suffer for his mis-deads. STICK TOGETHER

Q - Are most people going to park the cars? I am on the fence and not sure what I should do. A - come to the FOP meeting on Tuesday and find out what everyone is doing and what you should do as well. We need a massive turnout and must continue to show unity; to the public, to the media, and to ourselves. STICK TOGETHER

You joined the FOP for a reason - legal support, peer support, and a united bargaining front, etc. Come to the meeting if at all possible, or you will have no reason to whine about anything. You joined the FOP - NOW BE THE FOP!!! Stand up and be a man. Stand up and be a woman. This isn't just about money. STICK TOGETHER and PARK THE CARS.

The FOP Cannot Afford a Black Eye

December 12th, 2008 @ 1:04PM (15 years ago)

The FOP executive board cannot afford a black eye over the take home car matter and should take a stand of "neutral" on this matter when it meets next week with the rank and file. It's time people started thinking about this logically and not emotionally. Let me explain. If the board caves into the hardcore "not one penny more crowd" and recommends everyone park the cars, you will be lucky to get forty to fifty percent to park them. In my division, the work slow down didn't last seventy two hours... way to stick together and send a message. If the board goes the other direction and recommends paying the fee, the FOP will be seen as caving into the Mayor. The only way the FOP "saves face" is to stay "neutral." The Mayor has put the ball back in the FOP's court and if the "not one penny more crowd" get their way, the general public as well as Metro Council will see the police as a bunch of greedy bast*rds and will not stand behind us one bit when all city employees are taking a hit. Is it better to be seen as being wishy washy with a neutral position or receive a huge black eye by being seen as ineffective and irrelevant by recommending "park them" and getting maybe forty to fifty percent compliance?

I'M REALLY OFFENDED AFTER READING THE LAST SEVERAL POSTS. IT MAKES ME SICK TO HEAR POLICE TALKING ABOUT NOT BACKING UP OTHER OFFICERS. IF AN OFFICER CHOSES TO STAY IN THE TAKE HOME PROGRAM, THAT'S HIS DECISION, JUST AS YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION FOR YOURSELF. WITH THE LAST BREATH IN MY BODY, I WILL BACK UP ANY OFFICER THAT NEEDS IT, REGARDLESS OF HIS DECISION ON THIS MATTER.

I MADE AN EARLIER POST STATING THAT IF YOU WANTED TO MAKE A POINT, PARK ALL THE CARS NOW. HAVEN'T SEEN ANY MASS CAR PARKING GOING ON. WE'LL SEE HOW MANY OF THE 800 THAT SHOWED UP FOR THE FOP MEETING WILL STAY TOGETHER.

REGARDLESS, I STAND WITH ALL POLICE.

IT MIGHT SMELL FUNNY OR HAVE A CHIP IN THE PAINT. IT MIGHT NOT WORK AND I'LL HAVE TO TURN IT IN TO GET ANOTHER ONE. YEAH I KNOW I'LL GET ONE THAT WORKS BUT WHAT A HASSEL. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO KEEP THE TASER I HAVE AND TO DO THIS I WOULDN'T MIND PAYING 30.00 A MONTH HELL I'LL EVEN PAY A 100.00 A MONTH. TELL YOU WHAT I LOVE MY TASER SO MUCH I BET I WOULD PAY MORE FOR IT IF YOU JUST ASKED!!!

DOES THAT SOUND INSANE TO YOU? REPLACE THE WORD TASER WITH CAR! IT IS JUST A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT IT IS NOT YOUR CAR IT BELONGS TO THE DEPARTMENT! WHY IS THIS SUCH A BIG DEAL! IF THE OVER SURPLUS OF PARKED CARS GET SOLD GUESS WHAT YOU'LL STILL GET TO DO YOUR JOB. IF YOU KEEP THEIR CAR YOU STILL WILL GET TO DO YOUR JOB YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO PAY SOMEONE TO DO YOUR JOB.

Are you kidding? This is exactly why we have gotten screwed over for

so long! You get a new car assigned to you, and are willing to PAY 4-5%

of your salary to a THIEF to drive it off duty, and you gladly GIVE

AWAY your free health insurance, settle for Zero and 2% raises on the

contracts, etc. just to have a stupid take home car.

When I first came on, you had to have 3 years on SWORN before

you could even be considered for a take home car. I had guys on my

platoon closing on 5 years that didn't have a take home car. Guess

what- WE SURVIVED without it!! Yes it is a nice perk, but how much are

you willing to take and to put up with before you finally say ENOUGH IS

ENOUGH!!! There are plenty of off-duty jobs (if not ALL) that you don't

need a marked car for. -Look at the squirrels working the water

company/road jobs who ARE NOT EVEN POLICE in their personal cars with

yellow/white/red flashing lights! Corrections offiocers work without a

marked car everyday.

IF we do not stand together on this and PARK THE CARS, Jerry wins

AGAIN.If you keep taking what he is dishing out, you will always be A

VICTIM! Trade the truck in for an old Honda Civic that gets good gas

mileage. Save YOUR money.

December 12th, 2008 @ 4:02PM (15 years ago)

The Chief spoke to the inservice class today.... He said the current fee of $100/$160 is for this fiscal year. After July 1 he dosen't know what will happen. He gave no clear answer to the question of the probability of a future increase.

He stated if you turn you car in you will NOT get it back. You will have access to a car during your shift. He indicated he would be infavor of an assigned vehicle but another Officer on another shift would also be assigned the same vehicle.

He stated it was likely that there would be some people that would have a take home due to their specific assignments such as SWAT. He indicated this would be a very select few and that they may have access to a take home only during their assigned on-call months. The car would only be available to and from work.

He stated if you have Department issued equipment he would figure out where to store it. He gave no specifics on where that would be.

He stated the original $30/$60 gas fee was originally intended for GAS! It is no longer about that, it is now about money. He was clear that the new $100/$160 fee is about generating money and nothing else.

These are just the highlights on the notes I took today. He was clearly stressed and frustrated with the FOP and had nothing good to say about John. My guess is that the FOP is doing something right for him to be so upset. The Chief stressed the point that we should make our decision and not be influenced by emotion or by the FOP. On another not he referred to emergency meeting a couple of weeks ago as our "crazy meeting".

The 12/11 Teamsters vote resulted in a NO to the Furloughs, although by a slim margin. We have been instructed by the union stewards to take the furlough and after the first employee does, grievances and a lawsuit will follow. The Cars Are Gone

December 12th, 2008 @ 6:53PM (15 years ago)

The take home cars are gone. Whether it's now, in the near future, all at once, or gradually...the cars are gone. The Chief said he intends to sell the cars we turn in and cut the fleet down to around 400 cars. Does anyone think those cars are ever coming back??? Derby will be interesting with 40 blocks of Broadway Cruising manned by foot patrols and no cars to restrict traffic flow; don't forget maintaining the beats at the same time; don't forget Churchill Downs; let's hope no unforeseen catastrophe requires more than 400 police vehicles (i.e. Windstorm 2008). We won't have them. But don't worry, the Chief said "Those take home cars have NO effect on public safety," so I'm guessing that we won't need as many available on-duty either.

WHAT WILL THIS PROVE??

December 12th, 2008 @ 8:00PM (15 years ago)

IF WE PARK THE CARS AND OPT OUT, THE MAYOR WILL SELL OFF THE CARS AND WIN BECAUSE HE WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE ONE VERY IMPORTANT BENIFIT TO BEING A POLICE OFFICER. WE ARE GOING TO JUST LAY DOWN AND TURN IN THE CARS???? THE MAYOR IS SMART, I DONT LIKE HIM BUT HE IS SMART. WE ARE GOING TO TURN IN OUR CARS BY OUR CHOICE AND HE DOES NOT HAVE TO TAKE THEM AWAY. IF HE WAS TRYING TO TAKE THEM AWAY, WE WOULD FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL TO KEEP THEM BUT, WE ARE WILLINGLY JUST GIVING THEM UP.

FOP LEADERSHIP, WE NEED TO SIT DOWN AND THINK THIS THING THRU. NO ONE, I MEAN ABSOLUTLY NO ONE WANTS TO LOOSE THE CARS FOR EVER BUT IF WE DONT STOP AND PLAN OUR RESPONSE, HE WILL GET HIS WAY.

DID YOU KNOW THAT TAKING AWAY THE TAKEHOME CARS WAS IN THE MAYORS PLANS FOR THIS YEAR. YES, THAT IS CORRECT. HE HAS WON BECAUSE WE ARE JUST GIVING THEN TO HIM BY OUR CHOICE. HE IS A PROFESSIONAL AT GETTING HIS WAY. WE NEED A STRATAGY TO ADVANCE AND NOT JUST GIVE IN.

I SUPPORT THE FOP, BUT I DONT WANT TO LOOSE THIS BENIFIT FOREVER.

We are divided. Sad but true. This issue has caused more inner conflict than any other situation I can remember.

The big plan from the Mayor is to remove the take home car program. He is getting this done with our willingness.

December 20th, we will see how many officers will opt out. But, when an individual makes that choice, he/she will not know if they are in the majority or if they we one of the few that did what they said they would do.

FOP, take this decision away and unite us again. The Mayor should have to go to the FOP for this and not each officer individually. Take away this decision and it will stop the bad things to come internally with FOP brothers and sisters.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO STOP THIS DECISION FROM DIVIDING US. PLEASE ACT NOW.

It is so sad what happened to those four babies in the car. They were talented individuals. I think the driver of the car is responsible for the deaths of the young men, however, I also think the police officers who chased them should be at fault.
