Dont forget that King Jerry has led this new Metro since it started in 2003.If there is any money problems, it cant be from the raises he gave his police or fire employees. It is completely his fault. He is at the controls and spends money he doesnt have.

It is time for a change.

Speak up for the officers. The news will always put a microphone in front of you if they think its controversial. The ball is in your field.

Jerry wants you all to pay up now for your take-home car use while working off duty sell one of your helicopters.  Now on the other hand he is giving out money to the family of Michael Newby!  It's on the news that city settled with them in their suit against McKenzie Mattingly!  They are getting a ton of money from the city!  Let's lessen the paperwork.  All of you officers make your checks payable to Angela Bougges, mother of Michael Newby and ambulance chasing attorney T. Clay.   Have a great day!

I don't get it. For over 30 years there has been a government policy of providing take home cars to the Officers so that they can stop and render assistance if needed and provide extra police presence and provide extra security and all of a sudden the Mayor decides that in order to get back at the police for one reason or another he is going to claim that this program is bankrupting city government? He is saying that none of the stupid things he has done caused any of the problems just the cops using their cars to make a few extra bucks watching a construction site so that all of the builders materials and tools don't get stolen because there are not enough officers riding the beats to properly patrol areas. Don't forget that the same people are working you kids game dance etc....

Hey John, come out from under your desk and do something! JOHN, WHERE ARE YOU! It is interesting that we have not seen ANYTHING about this in the news or in the paper yet. I also understand that the chief has tried other things like this in the past and that his applecart was turned over because even though certain things are outside the contract, he cannot change anything that would affect your wages, hours or working conditions. Charging you $60 bucks a month would certainly abrogate that part of the contract wouldn't it?

A NEW UNION

February 17th, 2008 @ 3:08PM (16 years ago)

I work for IBT Local 89 and I have to say.....your union does ********. I've never seen a union turn it's back on the people who have elected them. If you really want to do something about it you need to read up on how to get the FOP out and a new union in there. It's dangerous because if some of the BU screw you, you could be left without a union.....but from what I can read it doesn't seem like you have a union now. I'm sure that the FOP has broken many Labor Laws dealing with Metro Government and vice versa. I wish you all the best of luck and hopefully you can get all this ******** resolved so you are paid what other officers doing the same job in different areas are paid. The biggest tool the union has is people working together. It will be worse before it get better but once the Mayor knows he won't win he will have to back track faster than ever before.

I can't post naything here yet, but I just got off the phone with an very high ranking E-Baord member that assured me that there is something big in the works. They can't talk about it here because it would be like showing the opposing team yourplaybook and stategy before the big game. It's like I told the guys on my platoon. This isn't a done deal. RCW can write all the little policis he wants too, but that doesn't mean they will stick.

Remember wen he tried to make former LPD Officers pay for their guns and leather? What happened there? HE WAS SMACKED DOWN. David James tried to tell him he couldn't do it but RCW has a size 12 ego in a size 7 hat. Remember when Uncle Jerry tried to take the insurance? That's right he got the SMACK DOWN in court and lost also.

Chill the talk about leaving the FOP. Just because they can't put everything in a public forum doesn't mean they aren't working on it.

I do believe that John McGuire should have issued a statement sying we are working on this....please be patient.

NOBODY has lost anything yet. NOBODY has been aggrieved yet. Don't get you ******** in a wad over something that hasn't affected you yet.

You know, I was trained by some pretty good old coppers that taught me that riding a beat wasn' about writting tickets. They would tell me if you want to write tickets...go to traffic. They told me that riding a beat meant you knew who the dirtbags were on your beat, you knew where the probems were likely to occur and you road the alleys because thats where the rats like to creep. This cap comming from the front office about it being the officers fault and he is going tolook into time management to see what the problem is is a "crock of crap"

To the citizens o fLouisville offices are being ORDERED to write tickets not ride their beats. They are being COUNSELED when their stats are low. The whole thing is about money..... Jerry gets $20 bucks a citation.

It doesn't matter if you're house gets broken into, itdoesn't matter if you get robbed, Jery just wants more money to spend on crap like the ring park and the arena.

The FOP has proven it's not worth the dues. If no one is getting raises, then Museum Plaza and all of the other Abramson pet rocks should be cut from the budget too. Why isn't the FOP out in front of the TV cameras talking about how poorly this department is being run and telling the public the real reasons that violence has gotten so bad in Louisville?

High fleet costs do waste a lot of money that could be better spent on other things. As everyone knows, LMPD is severely understaffed despite the false claims made by the administration in the media. That money should be going to hire more people, for overtime and for raises, instead of paying for gas guzzlers driven by people who think they're Dale Earnhardt or Danica Patrick. With the high number of inexperienced and physically unfit officers on this department there shouldn't be anyone responding to a 911 call alone. For the unmarked cars, there would be a cold day in hell before most house mouse officers and many Detectives will help a stranded motorist or back someone up on a traffic stop while they're off-duty. The concept of 24-hour patrol and higher police visibility doesn't apply to unmarked cars driven by off-duty officers unwilling to do anything while they're off-duty, so they shouldn't be driving around town on personal errands guzzling city gas without paying for it.

The Police Tax

February 18th, 2008 @ 1:11PM (16 years ago)

"Who will protect my family" is the question many city residents are already asking themselves, because White doesn't know how to run a police department. The career criminals are having their way with this city while the police are harassing regular people for minor violations to bump up the stats. When people ask me what to do about the crime, I tell them to get their carrying concealed license, because LMPD isn't up to the job anymore under this administration's poor leadership.

Has anyone noticed that it is taking longer for EMS to respond when you ask for them??? I know for a fact they are dropping the minimum coverage sometimes during the day and especially always at night due to this budget crunch. They have also cancelled in-services so that they can have more bodies to put in trucks. These people are the protecters of us protecters. It scares me that if something were to happen to me while at work there is no telling where the ambulance is coming from. And on top of that your not even guaranteed these days to get an ambulance that has a Paramedic on it.

DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHER WISE. I HAVE TALKED WITH THE INSURANCE CARRIER OF THE LEGAL DEFENSE PLAN AND THEY SPECIFICALLY TOLD ME, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE FOP TO GET THE LEGAL DEFENSE PLAN. THIS FOP IS NOT WORTH A CRAP AND THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE A STATEMENT IS TO DISCONTINUE YOUR MEMBERSHIP. I HIGHLY DOUBT THIS POSTING WILL BE UP FOR LONG, BECAUSE IT SPEAKS THE TRUTH.

Do you want to know the difference between the FOP and the police unions from some of the other higher paid departments? The officers on the other departments are well organized and aren't afraid of picketing like a union is supposed to when things are going badly. Stand up or shut up. You're probably not getting promoted anyhow.

The people in this town finally needed to wake up about the issue of the mayor and spending on public safety. He stated in his comment to the news media that the 60.00 dollar fee was to off set the use of Metro Government property when the police officer was recieving a finicial gain. The police officer would not have to work so much off duty if we could get a raise from contact. That is the major issue that he seemed he he seemed to forget in his news conference. Metro Government has taken over 1200.00 dollars away from each police officer in the past several years. The taxing of our uniform and equipment checks, the lost of the cost of living increase due to tax collection from the sinking fund, the cost of insurance over the past several years. The price tag is much higher than 1200.00 dollars that I mentioned above.

Also, if you haven't noticed that EMS coverage has dropped off for the Metro area at night. Due to the so-callled 9 million dollar shortfall only 6-8 trucks to cover the entire county now. It seems higher response times, more calls for service, civil and criminal liabity and people losing their lives isn't important enough to do the right thing.

It seems stranger that people will soon realize that their is something up with the Metro Govt when your Louisville Water Company Bill and MSD water usage fees will go up again for the next several years. Talk about a hidden TAX.

The Police Tax

February 22nd, 2008 @ 11:55AM (16 years ago)

EMS--Since EMS has also been mentioned in this thread, I thought I'd post some accurate information so the officers know what they have to work with.

There has been some question as to the number of ambulances available......here's how it works. From 0600-0200 there are 21 ambulances and 4 fly cars and from 0200-0600 there are 20 ambulances and fly cars. Now, on Mon,Tues,Fri the number of 0600-0200 ambulances varies because these days are known as "flex" days and there are extra people working who were suppose to be having in-service, but do to recent budget issues, in-services have been postponed for an unknown amount of time. Hence the extra trucks. Some days we have as many as 30 ambulances, but when you make 100,000 runs a year, 95,000 of which are complete BS....it's simply not enough.

A few other points officers may want to remember when calling for EMS. A Code 1 request may be held depending on the number of ambulances available. Calling for an ambulance to transport a CIT patient because you don't want too, ties them up from responding to other emergencies. I'm not saying all officers do this, but we all know that there are those that do. Also keep in mind that the ambulances are subject to make a run anywhere in the metro area, urban or suburban. The ambulance you call for at Dixie and Stonestreet may be coming from the Highlands, so please be very specific about what you need them for so MetroSafe can code the run correctly and hopefully eliminate some of the long waits.

Let's face it, LMPD and LMEMS are the two busiest public safety agencies, yet we always get the biggest f**kings when it comes time to save the city some money because Jerry spends it quicker than some ghetto rat that just hit the lottery. I think not only do we need to help each other out more at the street level, but we need to stand together when it comes time to do battle with the city over larger issues such as the ones we both currently are facing. Strength in numbers......Just my opinion.

For the ungrateful "person" that made this comment...................

To the police- please calm down! It looks very unprofessional when you post these comments, cursing and such. You get to drive as much as you want to in your police car, work off duty on roads, burning up tanks of gas for 8 hours or more, then take your cars everywhere. If I had a police car, I would gladly stop and help a stranded motorist when I saw one.

The $60 thing, just think of it like this- If Thorntons made you pay for all the free coffee and cokes you drink while your whole squad hangs out there at 3rd st. and on Bardstown Rd., you would pay much more than $2 a day, which this breaks down to.

P.S.- I think it looks bad when all those police cars hang out at those locations and look like you're having another roll call. Have some pride and protect us like you should.

?A Cop on the Take?

First he takes the oath.

Now look at all he takes -

He takes it in stride when people call him pig.

He takes time to stop and talk to children.

He takes your verbal abuse while giving you a ticket you really deserve.

He takes on creeps you would be afraid to even look at.

He takes time away from his family to keep you safe.

He takes your injured children to the hospital.

He takes the graveyard shift without complaint because it's his turn.

He takes his life into his hands daily.

He takes you home when your car breaks down.

He takes time to explain why both you headlights have to work.

He takes the job no one else wants - telling you a loved one has died.

He takes criminals to jail.

He takes in sights that would make you cry.

Sometimes he cries too, but He takes it anyway because someone has to.

If he is lucky, He takes retirement.

He takes memories to bed each night that you couldn't bear for even one day.

Sometimes, He Takes a bullet.

THANKS JERRY!!!

February 24th, 2008 @ 1:34PM (16 years ago)

$60 for the use of the car is going to over great for Louisville. Now all the FREE services the public WAS receiving will be replaced with OVERTIME. That's right every time I respond OFF DUTY by stopping for the motorist or writing a ticket to a reckless driver or answering an array of Police calls while OFF DUTY for FREE will now be charged to the city in the form of OVERTIME which they HAVE to pay. That's correct that $60 will now cost Jerry $120 a month. He may stick it up ours for $60 but we will now stick it up his side ways for twice that. Every time he takes money away we will put in for more Overtime for free services the public USED to get. Thanks, Jerry, my family and I will enjoy an extra special vacation on the taxpayers dime this year!!!!!

"I am the Officer" I have been where you fear to be,

I have seen what you fear to see,

I have done what you fear to do -

All these things I have done for you.

I am the person you lean upon,

The one you cast your scorn upon,

The one you bring your troubles to -

All these people I've been for you.

The one you ask to stand apart,

The one you feel should have no heart,

The one you call "The Officer in Blue,"

But I'm just a person, just like you.

And through the years I've come to see,

That I am not always what you ask of me;

So, take this badge ... take this gun ...

Will you take it ... will anyone?

And when you watch a person die

And hear a battered baby cry,

Then do you think that you can be

All these things you ask of me?

While you sleep, we're there.

When you're sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, or celebrating Christmas, we're there.

When its raining and cold, and you're glad to be in your home with your family, we're out there.

When it's your children's birthday, we're out there.

When it's our children's birthday, we're still out there.

You put on a suit and dress to go to work, we strap on a ballistic vest and a gun.

There's little room for error in your job, in ours there is none.

An error by you means a demotion, an error by us means a funeral.

When you tell your families "see you tonight" as you leave for work, you mean it. When we tell our family that, we pray we will.

At your job you strive to succeed, at our job we strive to survive.

In your job, one bad person is the talk of the office, in our job, one bad officer makes the news and suddenly were all bad.

In these headlines it's not what good we've done, but how much better it could have been done.

When you're scared you call us, when we're scared, we must carry on.

While you're eating a home cooked meal, we're having another hamburger.

While you're asleep with your spouse, ours sleep alone.

So the next time you're out with your family or friends, and you see a patrol car go by, remember the incredible sacrifice made by these officers every day.

Inside that car is a person that sacrifices his/her life, both professionally and personally Every day.

You can't understand the job I do.

So what's different, you ask, of me than you?

You see the beauty of life each day

and take for granted the part I play.

You can go home and leave your troubles behind,

but I am who I am, no matter the time.

To carry a gun and not to abuse it,

and praying to God I won't have to use it.

Everyday to be willing to risk my life,

wondering if, again, I'll see my children and my wife.

In Blue or Green I'm still easy to see

so there's really never a safe place to be. When you see danger, you can run and hide,

but I have ethics that I must abide.

To go to work knowing this could be the day

when some crazed lunatic might blow me away.

To care for the injured, to deal with the dead,

is always the part I truly dread.

So what's different you ask of you than me?

I am willing to give my life for you...

Will you for me?

ENOUGH SAID!

"Yes Me the Lousy Cop"

Well Mr. Citizen, I guess you have me figured out. I seem to fit neatly into the category you place me in. I'm stereotyped, characterized, standardized, classified, grouped, and always typical. I'm the "lousy cop." Unfortunately, the reverse isn't true. I can never figure you out.

From birth you teach your children that I am the bogeyman, and then you're shocked when they identify me with my traditional enemy, the criminal. You accuse me of coddling juveniles, until I catch your kid doing something. You may take an hour for lunch, and have several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer if you see me having just one cup.

You pride yourself on your polished manners, but think nothing of interrupting my meals at noon with your troubles. You raise hell about the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you. You know all the traffic laws, but never got a single ticket you deserved. You shout "foul" if you observe me driving fast enroute to an emergency call, but literally raise hell if I take more than ten seconds responding to your call!!!

You call it "part of the job" if someone strikes me, but it's "police brutality" if I strike back. You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a badly decayed tooth, or your doctor how to take out your appendix, but you are always willing to give me a few pointers on law enforcement. You talk to me in a manner and use language that would assure a bloody nose from anyone else, but you expect me to stand and take it without batting an eye.

You cry, "Something has to be done about all the crime!" but you can't be bothered with getting involved.

You've got no use for me at all, but, of course, it's OK if I change a tire for your wife, or deliver your baby in the back seat of my patrol car on the way to the hospital, or save your son's life with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, or work many hours over-time to find your lost daughter.

So Mr. Citizen, you stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my job, calling me every name in the book, but never stop a minute to think that your property, your family, or maybe your life might depend on one thing, ME, or one if my buddies.

Ok guys- NOW is the time to start SCREWING BACK!!!! The Gas Tax Policy is now in effect. Let's FLOOD this A-Hole with so many OVERTIME FORMS for Stranded Motorists, etc that we used to routinely do ON OUR OWN TIME, that in ONE PAY PERIOD,we Recover what KING JERRY would have made for the year off of our $60 a month!!!

Hey Jerry, you ***- EVERY time a citizen asks me for directions, EVERY stranded motorist, EVERY accident I happen across and call for an on-duty car, EVERY time I answer someone's question while off duty in that car-picking up a run on the way in to work- YOU ARE GOING TO PAY!!

Ladies and Gentelmen. It is very simple. Supply and Demand. I am no longer working for $30.00 an hour, it's now 40. When asked why I tell them that I now have to pay more to serve and protect. I am working off duty because I don't make enough on duty. Now don't get me wrong I don't live beyond my means but I live more comfortably with off duty. Let's see how long the "Kings" friends go before they A) Pay me more money to protect their copper, or buisness or B) Get broken into on a nightly basis and recover the costs themselves

Focus people focus!

The thred is getting hijacked and we need to concentrate on the fact that our beloved chiefie poo and his buddy uncle Jerr are trying to dry shaft all the working stiffs. I just read my e-mail and Prez McGuire left this message:

This is just a reminder that, ?at close of business on February 29, 2008, previously approved 2008 secondary employment forms will become null and void.? It is important that you have all filled out new off duty employment forms and turned them in. (YEAH!) Glad to hear something is being done about it)

The FOP is taking action regarding this policy. This was discussed during the last General Meeting. We are also working on making the website more informative and user friendly for our members. In the future, that will be the place where issues that cannot or should not be sent over Departmental email will be addressed. It will not include an open forum.( I hope they keep it up to date. That crap that Keeling create sucked! I can indderstand them not having a GREAT forum like this, but at lestkeep me informed on what is going on at the Lodge. I can't get to many of the meetings because I work 3rd platoon and gee we seem to be shorter now than before we merged....Hmmmmm)

I heard they're going to put GPS logging equipment in all marked and unmarked cars starting later this year so they can see where the cars have been and how fast they've been driven.

Excellent information! Reminds me of a community meeting I was forced to attend that Col. Turner was also present at. He was asked about police response times. He stated that police response times are "within acceptable parameters." The people in attendance seemed to buy that line. What they failed to realize is that "police response time" is the time frame it takes for the police to arrive to your location AFTER they are dispatched... which is probably pretty good. The question that the general public should ask is "After I call the police, how long does it take them to get to me?" I am sure that the time frame falls outside of "acceptable parameters" when the division I work at can be holding as many as 23 runs on a nice, hot summer night.

I hear the Chief and the Mayor talk about the $60.00 a month fee for my car so that I can help relieve some of the cost to the city for fuel while I work off duty. Do they honestly believe that I want to work off duty? I would gladly stop working off duty and spend more time with my kids at home doing my job as a parent, but I cannot. I have to work off duty because the cost of living (inflation) in this country far exceeds the 2% yearly raise the Mayor, and other numbskull's on this department who voted yes, thinks is fair.

I sit around the roll call table and listen to people complain about this and complain about that. I hear great ideas and awful ideas. I see the passion displayed by some officers and the complete disregard by others. We will not get a Fair deal from this department or city, until we grow some ***** as a group instead as individuals. The news channels should be invited to show up at 2030 on the third Tuesday of every month to hear a briefing from our FOP reps outside of the hall which should include a list of concerns that officers have at that time. I hear all the time from people in the city that they think we should be paid more and that they support us. I believe they would if they knew what was going on. It should be the mission of the FOP to inform them every month without fail.

It is my humble opinion that we give our FOP reps a limited ammount of time to display results, say 1 year for example. If they fail to do so then a special meeting should be held by the members and a vote cast to determine if we allow them more time or if they should be removed from their postitions and a special election be held within 14 days. If you give someone unchecked power to do as they wish, you usually end up getting screwed in the long run. Long ago should be the days when you talk a bunch of crap, get elected to the FOP, and make side deals with the city against the members to obtain a cushy new job right after you leave your position.

I watched WAVE 3 news and could not believe what I saw. Our FOP president speaking to the media on the issue of our vehicle fee. Here is a quote;

McGuire says the amount is not the point. It is a change in what officers have come to expect.

"It was sold to them as a benefit of their employment, the use of this car for off duty purposes including off duty employment," says McGuire.

According to McGuire, the change came without the union and the city ever sitting down to negotiate and that violates state labor law. He hopes this complaint will force the Metro government to the bargaining table.

Now granted, that is one argument to make, but it was the dumbest one he could have used. To me that tells the city to just changed the benefit page on the LMPD application package to read "Should you as an officer decide to work off duty, you will be charged a monthly fee of $60.00" Problem fixed right?!

What he should have argued was the fact that most officers on this department, who work off duty jobs, do so to make up for the shortfalls in wages. I would gladly stop if I could afford to. I can think of 20 other things I'd rather be doing with my time, and with my kids, than working off duty. Being as I do not get paid a decent wage, I am being penalized by the city because I have to earn the money my FAMILY needs elsewhere. To those who are thinking " Try living within your means. " I say " I refuse to make my children do without or refuse them a decent life because the Mayor will not pony up a decent wage."

Jerry knows that the Police, Fire, and EMS personnel are duty bound to show up to work and do their jobs. He knows that unlike the people at other occupations with unions we cannot strike or refuse to work. That gives him all the permission he needs to take money that should be going to us and use it to feed whatever little desire he might have at the time. Next time you look at a man or woman in a uniform, I want you to realize that just like you, that man or woman has a family. They have dreams of their children growing up and becoming successful. They worry about how the hell they are going to pay for that college tuition that seems to be closing in faster and faster! They sit over bills and try to determine what they can do without so that their kids can have a roof over their heads and some semblance of security. They hurt, bleed, and cry just like you do. We are not robots in a uniform. We are people who chose a job, a dangerous one at that, to help our fellow man. Tell the Mayor to stop using that against us.

I know the thought of having to pay for the use of the cars is displeasing at best, but think of it this way - cars are not guaranteed by contract and the city is under no obligation to provide a take-home vehicle. You know this sorry excuse for a Mayor as well as I do and the only reason the OMNI car program was started in the first place was for the cost savings it offered. That is the only reason we still have it today. There are numerous additional benefits to this program and the Mayor could care less about any of them - it's the $ he cares about.

The Metro Government has ordered fewer and fewer cars every year since merger (even skipping the 2004 model year altogether) and has not even ordered cars for this year. It is looking very much like they will skip the Spring ordering period and have made no commitment to ordering any in the fall. The earliest we would see cars arrive would be this time next year (trust me). If the shortage gets too great in the meantime do not be surprised if they start taking some of the cars back to ensure an adequate pool fleet. Don't think it could happen? Take your head out of the sand and look around.

I guess my point is that we need to pick our battles and this is really not one that we will weather well. Our esteemed President went to the media and now they are conducting their own poll over wether the public thinks this is reasonable. What do you think the result of that poll will be? We look like whiny asses and the Mayor has even more incentive to turn the screws even tighter. Hopefully the President will actually talk with the Chief (which he has yet to do) and make an effort to resolve the issue before running to the oh-so-pro-police media and making us all look foolish. I do not want to pay for the car anymore than you do, but considering that I make thousands of extra dollars to provide for my family every year (considering we are not being lavished with generous raises by the City) and it will only cost me $720 a year (at most), I think it is worth it.

Fight the good fight, but pick them wisely. This was handled very poorly by our newly elected "leaders".

Saty safe.

The Lexington- Fayette Urban County Government just completed a management audit and efficiency study that was contracted to a study group out of Ohio. they found that it is more efficient (i.e. cheaper) to provide police officers with a home fleet privilege than to hot seat cars. I'm sure Louisville's situation would be similar to ours.

Some highlights:

1. The home fleet privilege is worth about $10,000. (We had never had a good number on this, so it was great to see it in a report commissioned by the LFUCG.) The company got that number by reviewing published studies of police fleet management programs.

2. There are savings realized by not having to provide parking space for officers' POVs.

3. There are "savings realized due to increased officer productivity as a result of not having to check out a pool car and transfer gear from one car to another."

4. It increases the life- cycle expectancy of the vehicle as opposed to cars that are running 24/7.

The only recommendation that the surveying company had for LFUCG was to conduct their own study to verify the company's findings.

The bottom line is that it is absolutely a bunch of horsesh*t for your mayor to be screwing with you that way. Giving you guys those cars costs the city a lot less than not giving them to you.
