Remember that any appointed position in a local or federal government is there to serve the people and whats best for the people they serve. It is not the other way around. As a citizen, I demand that whoever is appointed as mayor or chief of police or a officer, that they do what is best for me and my family. If they ignore what I have to say, or dismiss it because it is not politically correct, then they lose my respect and my vote. You work for me, not the other way around. If your not in it with a service attitude then don't sign up.
