Overtime for catching DUIs and speeders on a holiday weekend or overtime because of Derby events is one thing. Overtime because there are too many murders, robbers, and rapists roaming the streets in April is something entirely different.

The former is because of something special happening. The latter is because the department can't keep up with what is now routine amounts of crime, also called called under-staffing. It's a band aid solution that works in a very half-ass manner. People become too worn out to be able to think straight enough to dot all the i's and cross all the t's. attend court and actually get a conviction.

You end up with 1-sentence narratives for murder suspects that force a judge to put them on H.I.P. That's what making people work with no sleep for days gets you.
