They could create the PIEIO to investigate them. Major O. MacDonald would be an ideal leader for both.

Seriously though, the explorers proved PIU and PSU belong under a sworn Chief of Public Safety or Police Commissioner above the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police has his hands too many incidents for those units to be put under his control.

Why should we trust you? Maybe if LMPD would keep their junk and their squirrel tails in their pants we wouldn't need PIU

PSU, PIU and IA were always a good idea in theory, especially the attempt to make them all Lt's several years ago, but it never panned out as intended. Betts, Corder, and several others who never went to jail when they should have prove the myth their being "untouchables" is fictional. It was the same with the old IA too. They tend to hammer those command dislikes while letting those who command favors resign without charges.

It's not necessarily the fault of the people working the cases. Both PIU and PSU should be totally firewalled from the Chief's office. They should be under 2 Lt's appointed to a 5-year fixed term, not a political major, who only interacts with the Chief's office for 2 reasons: to accept a request for an investigation and to report the final results of the completed investigation. The people there should be picked independently of anyone else in command, including the Chief. Bottom line is the Chief and other command are who's screwed those units up over the years and they should be kept at a distance.
