It's not unheard of. The brief excerpt doesn't provide enough context to know why that question may have been asked.

Leading questions are often used as a last resort in an interrogation and during cross-examination of a hostile witness on the stand, well after the open questions you're used to have been asked and answered. Most patrol officers and detectives are only familiar with open questions because they rarely do lengthy interrogations like you would with a homicide.
