I'm not the OP but allow me to let you in on a little secret: Never try to argue with or rationalize with a mentally ill person. It is so tempting to do because you never can forget the fact that you are communicating with a human being and as such you feel tempted to keep trying to make the mental person understand the obvious. At times you might will feel like you are gaining traction, the mentally ill person will seem to grasp onto reality, but you are suddenly back to square one. Once you recognize someone is mentally ill (albeit it comes in differing degrees), I advise you to cease any communication with that person that would require any cognitive reasoning.
