He may not have had a clear shot. I'd prefer that nobody shoots in my direction, thank you very much.
Its proven that a person with a knife or similar sharp object is capable of killing anyone within 21 feet of them. Many in the public don't understand this, so it's incumbent on the department to let them know after someone charging an officer with a knife is shot. The department should also have training for knife fighting and allow trained officers to carry the M-9 or Ka-bar. Drawing a pistol isn't a realistic option for saving your own life when they're already up on you.
