That's because they're not a full service Sheriffs Department and are only a court services department today. That would change if they started getting some of the money LMPD is getting for street policing and could match pay for laterals. There are a few younger people that could do detective work, but most of them would have to be lateral hires. The old guys sitting in the court would stay where they are.

Aubrey hasn't had any real competition in years, but I wouldn't bet on him running for another term. It could all change if someone like McCubbin or James took over. LMPD is a liability to the Mayor, so I bet he'd welcome the chance to offload law enforcement activities that cause him political risk.
