Officers shouldn't expect to be able to save their own lives with a handgun against an attacker with a knife. There is usually not enough time to pull, aim and shoot when the suspect is within 21 feet. Every sworn officer should receive hand-to-hand combat training annually, from new hires to the Chief. The most important part of the job has little to do with reports, citations, community discussions or going to court, but how you handle yourself on the street.
