LMPD recruiting and training bears much of the blame for the shortage. Most good laterals have other offers that don't require weeks of recruit school. They turn down LMPD job offers routinely because of that. The selection process is also way too long to keep people interested after they apply.

The pay being offered is far less too. LMPD will never catch up by hiring new recruits who quit as quickly as here. They will have to quit pretending everyone requires retraining and drop the wannabe military drill instructor academy idea to be taken seriously by good candidates.
