In your days police officers were basically high school diploma brutes who hated the word "college". You probably knew a few of your platoon mates who came to work half drunk and instead of it causing an outrage, you thought it was funny and didn't dare report it. There was NO accountability. I have been on LMPD since 2007 and I still hear the stories of the old LPD. I'll admit, I probably would not have had a long career in your era.
