This is my concern as well. When you factor in getting up, getting ready, eat, driving to work to be there 'early' for roll call, that's an extra 1 1/2 hours (?) Then 30 minutes return home. Add in 8 hours of sleep (although you don't automatically go to sleep as soon as you walk in the door of home) your left with about 1 hour in a day not committed to work.
I know nurses work 12's, but there not on the road, and most don't have to make instantaneous life and death decisions, or defend their own life...
