LMPD :: Louisville Metro Police Department

Does anyone know why we use the word "Metro" in the name of our department? I never could understand it. It is such an annoying word and does not seem to have a purpose. I asked about it a few years ago and was told the word is used to "respect the heritage of Jefferson County Police". Otherwise, we would be 'Louisville Police Department'. Well, that sounds good to me!!! I never tell people I work for Louisville Metro Police Department. They completely understand Louisville Police.
