About

Shayla Reaves joined the WBNS-10TV News team as a reporter in August 2010. She previously worked as a reporter at WAVE 3 News in Louisville, Ky.

While she was in Kentucky, Reaves took a dog bite for the team and landed an exclusive interview with the owner. She also saved Louisville-area high school students $2,000 on airline flights after the H1N1 scare prompted organizers to reschedule a Texas conference. Reaves' reports also prompted donations for a family reopening a former Boys and Girls Club building.

Shayla also learned to laugh at herself and learn from her co-workers every day. In the dog bite story, she was actually bitten by a wiener dog and "braved" her fear of dogs to get the story.

Reaves' reporting earned her awards from The Society of Professional Journalists and the Kentucky Associated Press Broadcasters.

A graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Reaves was named the top broadcast student in her graduating class. While in college, she received the university's prestigious Gary Cummings Award, was selected as an Outstanding Woman Journalism Student by the Association of Women Journalists-Chicago and was recognized for her reporting through the Illinois News Broadcasters Association.

Reaves also served as president for the Northwestern University chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. Her leadership helped earn the university its first National NABJ Student Chapter of the Year title.
